When the Lamar County public address announcer said there would be a 30-minute delay due to lightning during Friday's Bleckley-Lamar football game, many Royal fans probably groaned. After all, Barnesville was about an hour and a half drive. A delay would make the evening even longer.

But after the final buzzer sounded, no one wearing purple and gold likely minded getting home late. Because the delay allowed for BCHS to overcome some early mistakes and win their season opener.

The Trojans drove to the BC 26 on their first drive but the defense held on fourth down. After appearing to get a stop on their second drive, Lamar used a fake punt to get on the board. The 44-yard run with completed PAT had BCHS down 7-0 with 4:14 left in the first.

On the Royals second drive, the ball was moved near midfield thanks to a personal foul called on Lamar. However, a personal foul on BC caused the drive to stall. LC struck with another big play on their next possession, a 44-yard touchdown pass. Though the point after failed, Bleckley trailed 13-0 with over a minute left in the first.

A fumbled kickoff appeared to continue Lamar's momentum to begin the second. Play was stoped with 11:48 left in the half due to lightning. Things changed once the teams returned to the field. D'Andre Pitts blocked a Trojan punt and returned it to the LC one. Ken Hughes dove in on the next play

BC was within 13-7 about halfway through the second quarter. Late in the half, the Royals took the lead. Derrick Farrow scored from 14 yards out with less than two minutes remaining to put BCHS on top 14-13 going into the half. Bleckley's defense again stepped up in the third.

Rydealous Taylor picked off a ball stopping a drive which had reached the BC 29. Another Lamar turnover led to Bleckley points when Vidal Nelson recovered a fumble on the Trojan 15. Justin Chambers hooked up with Brentine Taylor on a 13-yard score. Though the point was blocked, BCHS led 14-13 with 2:25 left in the third.

A Dytrez Nelson five-yard touchdown with 6:28 remaining in the fourth appeared to put the game in hand. However, the Trojans once again used the big play to hang around. A 30-yard run drew them within 27-19 after again missing the extra point. BC fumbled on their next possession.

LC recovered at their own 44 but would not score. A blocked punt in the final minutes put the Trojans on the Royal 43. BC's defense again held as the Royals won 27-19.

Hughes had 58 yards on 12 carries with one score. Taylor caught five balls for 72 yards. The Bleckley passing offense was an efficent 7-13 for 117 yards and one touchdown.

Defending Class A state champion will be Bleckley's opponent in their home opener September 3. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm.
