You could say this has been a "summer of discontent" for the Middle Georgia Pitbulls. Rainy weather at the begining of the year forcing game cancellations. Miscommunications with the Southeast American Football League. It's been a tough season for the Cochran-based 501(c)(3) non-profit football team.
MGP took the field only twice. Other games were either forefit wins or losses. With one game remaining in the regular season, the Pitbulls announced the cancellation of the remainder of their schedule Wednesday. They also have began plans for a return in 2011.
The team issued a press release Wednesday written by team CEO DaShawn Rumph and signed by all members of the organization. From the release.
"The Middle Georgia Pitbulls football season has officially ended. The 2010 season has been the worst financial and performing season of our two-year history. After replacing a majority of the MGP Players lost/stolen equipment, binding over 2,000 dollars placed us in a “Do or Die” situation each week of the season.
From constant SEAFL League miscommunication issues, continued “no show games” with lost weekly rental fees of the West Laurens Middle School, to expenses outweighing income. Unfortunately, we were unable to make a successful drive to the playoffs this season.
That is the reason we are starting now for the 2011 season. Major changes are in the works now, but we have made a positive step forward by selecting the National Development Football League (NDFL), which is based out of Atlanta.
This league will bring positive publicity to the Cochran and Middle Georgia area along with college and pro scouts to recruit various players. Economically, the change in leagues also lowers team costs due to shorter distances to opposing teams.
Later on the year we be conducting new fundraisers, community projects, and other activities to include the communities involved, capping off everything in February with a “Season Launch” banquet. Everyone should be excited about the new, expanding opportunities the organization will be providing soon.
As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organized football team, it is already hard enough to render enough income to provide transportation and purchase equipment for our team. We hope that this season does not hinder you for providing your continued support and donations to our team to build a winning 2011 Season.
We hope to continue toward next season with your support and bring a championship to the Middle Georgia Area in 2011!!!!"
